As a Marmaris lover, it's a great pleasure to tell you about Marmaris. Let's begin this detailed Marmaris guide with its history...
Marmaris' History
Marmaris was formerly known as Phykos. With its known history dating back to 3400 BC, Phykos was an important port city in the Carian region, opening onto the Mediterranean. Because this region is located on the trade route between Rhodes and Egypt, it has been of great importance to many civilizations throughout history and has hosted them.
Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans ruled these lands. Traces of this rich history can be seen in the ancient cities located in the Marmaris region.
Where Did the Name Marmaris Come From?
The name Marmaris appears as "Marmarisos" in Herodotus's sources and as "Marble" in the Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of the Sea) by the famous Turkish navigator Piri Reis. It is believed that this name originated from the marble quarries in Bozburun.
The most widely known mention of the city, which is the subject of many legends, is found in the famous "Seyahatname" (Book of Travels) by traveler Evliya Çelebi. During the Rhodes campaign in 1522, Suleiman the Magnificent, finding the old castle located here too small, ordered his architect to enlarge it. However, upon returning from the Rhodes campaign, the sultan found the castle too small and exclaimed, "Architect, this castle is too small," and ordered the architect to be hanged. These words were repeated by the castle's inhabitants, and the name "Mimaras" remained Marmaris.
Ancient Cities in the Marmaris Region
There are twelve ancient settlements in the Marmaris region. These are Physkos (Beldibi, Asartepe), Amos (Turunç, Kumlubük), Bybassos (Hisarönü), Kastabos (Hisarönü), Syrna (Bayırköyü), Larymna (Bozburun), Thyssanos (Söğüt), Phoenix (Taşlıca), Loryma (Bozukkale), Kasara (Serçe Limanı), Kedrai (Sedir Island), Euthena, and Amnistos (Karacasöğüt).
These ancient cities were small Carian cities, and not many artifacts have survived to the present day, apart from the remains of their castles and city walls. Among these cities, Kadrai is the largest and most important.
Marmaris Netsel Marina is the largest and most modern marina in the Southern Aegean. With a capacity of 720 yachts, the marina offers a full range of yacht services. You can access blue cruise boats with Marmaris yacht charters.
Bar Street, the center of Marmaris' nightlife, is located just behind the marina and extends to the market.
Cafes, bars, and fish restaurants along the waterfront welcome local and international visitors throughout the day. I highly recommend enjoying an evening of fish and seafood at the Marmaris waterfront.
